Credit Counseling Agencies

by Elizabeth Morgan

Credit counseling agencies are dedicated to helping individuals who are facing financial problems. These agencies employ the experience and knowledge of people who are experts on financial issues and provide advice and financial education as well as other more advanced services to their clients. Those agencies make their money either from voluntary contributions or from the payment fees of their clients.

Specifically, credit counseling agencies offer financial education and advice, individual counseling, and credit/budget management guidelines. Moreover, some agencies offer reverse mortgage counseling, housing counseling, and repayment plans, as well as confidential budget counseling.

Although some credit counseling agencies do not charge you, most of them do. They either charge (minimal) administrative fees in order to cover their expenses or receive money from the creditors of their clients for helping the indebted clients make their payments. It is perfectly possible for someone to find free-of-charge counseling on credit or economic issues, but repayment services and reverse mortgage counseling usually do come at a cost.

Before deciding to seek assistance from a specific credit counseling agency, it would be helpful to consider a few questions. Is the agency nonprofit? Are the counselors certified? Is the agency a member of NFCC (National Foundation for Credit Counseling)? What are the services, programs, and plans they offer? Are the services being offered confidential? Does the agency offer a person-to-person discussion where you can sit down with an expert and discuss your issues?

It is very important to be aware of all these things. If one agency doesn't meet all or most of the above requirements, then it would be best to try another one. After all, there are many agencies out there, and you should not stick with the first one that you encounter. Consider alternative solutions and agencies, but do not hesitate to ask for help; it might possibly save you from a future financial crisis.
