Debt Reduction and Elimination - How to Find

by L. Sampson

If you find yourself constantly making late payments on your credit cards and fear sinking into a cycle of only paying the minimum on your balance each month, it may be time to start looking at debt reduction services. Before you commit to one, take the time to make sure that they are able to meet all of your needs.

Check with your creditors before you look anywhere else.

Your creditors already work with several debt reduction services on a regular basis, so they are a great place to find a recommendation for a debt reduction service. Going with someone on your creditors list assures you that the company will have experience working with the companies you owe money too.

Search the Internet and comparison shop.

With the advent of the internet, it is possible to research several companies and pick the one that best fits your need, all from the comfort of your own home. You can even fill out information requests or personalized forms to help companies better access what kind of help they can give you. Any forms you fill out in your search for information shouldn't obligate you to accept service from the reduction service you are investigating.

Choose a company that is committed to not only getting you out of debt, but wants to keep you out of debt.

One good gage of a reputable company is whether or not they offer actual credit counseling to give you the tools to stay out of future debt once your current debt is paid off. Do they help you learn to budget and live within your means, or are they unconcerned about your credit card spending habits? Make sure that any company you deal with has a physical address and not just a PO Box and check to make sure that their counselors are nationally certified. It is also a good idea to do a quick check of the company with the Better Business Bureau to make sure that there are no complaints filed against them.
