How to Acquire Links

by Matt Ambos

Have you been working diligently acquiring links to your web site? If you are trying to promote a web site or achieve a higher page rank then you probably have. If you are like me you have tried some ?blaster? program to submit link after link to FFA sites and classified ads. From my experience with this process all you will receive is about 100 meaningless E-mails a day and no sales. So how do we change this? In this article I will give you some of the insights I have found that will help in acquiring links from web sites that will actually assist you in your goals and not hinder you.

FFA sites or link farms will not hurt your rank, but more than likely they will not help either. Never place a link on your web site to a link farm; you will be penalized for this. The best link to have is what is known as a back link. These links are one way links directly to your web site. When searching for these links it is important that the site linking to your site is in the same category. For example a shopping site to a shopping site or marketing site to a marketing site. But a link from a marketing site to a shopping site carries little or no affect because they are not related and will not assist the customer in what they need.
Following are some of the most common methods for finding links.
The 1st and probably easiest method is to simply buy the links. More than likely when you are buying a link it will be in the form of a text ad. These can be bought in different lengths of time, but remember the longer the link is out there, the more valuable it will be. It is also possible to buy links from high ranking web sites. For a monthly fee the web master will place a link on their site to yours. Another possible way to buy links is to hire a link building company. Their fee will be well worth the work and time saved.

The next method is to submit your site to Niche directories or communities. Find directories that are related to your web site. If you are selling world class widget?s then find that directory to submit to. This may take a little more work fishing out the correct directories but will be worth it in the long run. When submitting to a web directory make sure your link is no more than 3 clicks from the directories home page. Any more than this and the web bots will not find your link.

Another method would be to contact individual web site owners to see if they would be willing to link to your site. Most likely this will be a reciprocal link, where you link to their site and they link back to yours. If you decide to go this route make sure you do your home work first. Before contacting the web master you should have an idea where on the web site your link should be placed. It also helps if you link to their web site before contacting the other web master. Following is a list of suggestions that will make it easier to contact the web master:

1. Try faxing or phoning Website owners. Faxes receive a lot more attention than emails.

2. Make sure that your email (or fax) is individualized, and states the benefits for their site and their visitors.

3. Make sure that your site has good quality content that people are going to want to link to.

4. Make the email (or fax) personal. Use the webmaster's name if you can find it.

5. If the webmaster doesn't respond to your first email, try emailing again a week later as a gentle reminder. This can often work well.

6. Use a database to keep track of who you have emailed and their responses.

7. Create a template email that you can use to save time BUT don't send the same email to everyone, make sure that you individualize.

8. If you are sending out lots of emails you can use an emailing program such as Mail loop to individualize each email.

Which ever method you decide to use, understand that it is an ongoing process. It will take several months, if not longer, to build up a successful amount of links. But once you have been able to acquire the links, you will see a noticeable difference in your page rank.
